KUALA LUMPUR: The percentage of teenage girls involved in smoking are much higher compare to teenage boys. They are most likely to start smoking at the age of 10.
Second National health Morbidity and Mortality Survey conducted in 2003 found that 28.8% of teenage girls smoked, more than double the figure for boys, which was 14.1%.
This is very much worrying as there was a serious increase in the number of female smokers who start at a very young age.
According to rosnah the teenagers are influenced by advertisements that emphasize smoking with physical beauty and weight loss. u cant gain any of these by smoking , all u get is ugliness and malfunction on brains and threat to health she added.
the impact of smoking also increased the number of miscarriage and premature delivery of babies.
She hope that parents, teachers, non goverment organisations takes this matter in consideration and create awareness of the negative impact of smoking.
She said punishing the teenagers would only cause them to be rebellious. The best way to treat this problem is by using educational materials and specific advertisements.
